Top 5 Wednesday #2 || July 13th || Books You Wish Had Sequels

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Another week, another five picks! This week's Top 5 Wednesday is Books You Wish Had Sequels and I had so much fun choosing my selection! In general, people are afraid of sequels because usually they don't live up to their expectations. But sometimes, a book is so good or the ending is so unsatisfying that a second book to a standalone or an extra book to a trilogy/series is needed and wanted. Endings matter a lot to me, in my opinion they can make you love a book you hated its first three quarters or hate a book you loved all its chapters. Let's get started, here are my picks:

  • July 13th, 2016 || Books You Wish Had Sequels:
"Standalones that you wish had a sequel or the last book in the series that you wish wasn't the last."

5. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart:

I'm not saying that the ending lacked something, the story was wrapped quite well but there's something about the world the author created and the way her characters were portrayed that made me feel a sequel would be a perfect addition. I'm not sure if Lockhart is planning on writing a second book but I hope she does eventually. I don't want to give away anything about this book because the slightest revelation would feel too spoilery but I wonder if those who read it would love a sequel too. It is a peculiar book to say at least.

4. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge:

This may not be my favourite Beauty and The Beast retelling but I truly believe it deserves a sequel even though the ending was satisfying. The plot was all over the place, the author had the potentiel to write down something mesmerizing but ended up jumbling all the details and honestly at some point, there was too much informations, I thought my brain short circuited. However, when I learned that this was part of a series, I guessed all books focused on the same characters but the second one was basically a Cinderella retelling and that let me down. I wanted her to carry on with Cruel Beauty because I knew the author had the potentiel to learn from her mistakes and write something less agitated. I still hope she would do it at some point, I have faith it will be much better than the first book.

3. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen:

This sounds crazy. I know it. But I always wanted a sequel to Pride and Prejudice! It's one of my favourite classics and I know that the concept of a second book was not famous back then but I still wished she gave us something more. A novella, a sequel, a short story... anything would be perfect. To revisit Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet once more, to learn about their relationship and how it evolved, to know the destiny of the rest of her sisters... It would always be a dream of mine.

2. The Ruby Red trilogy by Kerstin Gier:

This trilogy ended perfectly but it also opened the door for so much more. It's about time-travel, crazy adventures and heart-throbbing characters. Believe me, there's angst but it will leave you giggling like a child. It doesn't even have to expand with our two leads, the author can write a spin-off series with other characters, the ones we knew or ones we never heard of before. I believe in Kerstin Gier, her writing style is light and rich and I need more time-travel books by her, okay!

1. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman:

My current favourite read of 2016. And enough with the Gaiman jokes, this book was the definition of epicness to me. I didn't expect it to be that gripping, heck, I didn't even expect to enjoy it. This is urban fantasy set in the undergrounds of London known as London Below. There's magic, adventures, whimsical characters, creepy villains and a lot of things going on. The author introduced tons of places and each place had so much potentiel. He could write a never-ending series in the Neverwhere world, not just a sequel and I would read every single thing. He did actually write a short story in George R. R. Martin's anthology book Rogues titled How The Marquis Got His Coat Back which focused on my favourite character in the book, Marquis De Carabas but as perfect as it was, it's not enough! It had been twenty years already, please give us something more!

That's all, I believe~ It would be lovely to know your picks for this week's topic too!
