Shadowhunters || Casting Discussion

Hi there~ As some of you know, The Mortal Instruments is getting a remake and will be turned into a TV show on ABC Family after the movie -well how can I say this in the least painful way- flopped and sucked. It starts airing in January 2016 and they're shooting it right now.
Today, I'll be discussing the casting and giving my opinions on them based on their looks only because other than Dom, Alan and Harry, I haven't seen the rest of cast act before.
Alright, let's start:

  • Jace Wayland: (-inserts a handful of other last names- /cough/)

He is being played by Dominic Sherwood, who also starred as Christian Ozera in the Vampire Academy movie (WHICH IS BY THE WAY A GOOD BOOK-TO-MOVIE ADAPTATION, OKAY. THERE YOU GO, I SAID IT). Visual wise, he is perfect for Jace, he has this "I am a flawless sexy mother---ing badass" look on his face. However Dom has dark in real life but if you check the on-set pictures, you can see he dyed it dark-ish blond which is good, so stop whining all of you out there who think he's not blonde enough. Plus can I be totally honest? I HATED Jamie Campbell so I'm over the moon that someone who ACTUALLY looks like Jace, will portray him.

  • Clary Fray:

Clary Clary Clary~ Choosing Katherine McNamara to play Clary is the BEST. DECISION. EVER. Hands down. Just look at her, isn't she the cutest, prettiest little pumpkin ever? She is my second favorite casting choice and I feel like she'll do a great job portraying Clary. In the books I did have a few problems with her but she'll always remain a sweetheart. And for those who are complaining that her hair color isn't the right shade, I'd like to tell you that in the books she is described as a fiery redhead not a plain redhead like Lily Collins' hair in the movie. Hers is perfect and if you don't believe me, go check the girl on the 'City of Ashes' cover, hers looks the same as Kat's.

  • Alec Lightwood:

He is being played by Matthew Daddario. Visual wise, he looks great even though I slightly like the movie Alec more. He gives arrogant vibes which is good, I guess (he's adorable on set, he's not really arrogant, he just gives those vibes). I know I sound nonchalant but that's because I really am, Alec is not one of my favorite characters. In fact , I don't I care about him at all (other than shipping him with Magnus) but hopefully the TV show will change way I look at him because neither the books nor the movie did.
Fun Fact: His sister Alexandra Daddario played Annabeth in the Percy Jackson movies.

  •  Isabelle Lightwood:

She will be played by Emeraude Toubia. I really have mixed feelings about her. I mean, she has long black hair, dark eyes, killer body but there's something about her that doesn't scream Isabelle. She's such an awkward potato on the filming set but she was praised by the staff for being extremely professional. I really, really hope she's pull off Isabelle's character well. If not, that would be a great disappointment.

  • Simon Lewis:

He is being played by Alberto Rosende. He looks exactly the way I pictured Simon, I can't be happier with this casting. And not only that, in real life he also wears glasses and is super geeky and a total goofball. Alberto is such a sweetheart and I truly hope he'll live up to everyone's expectations.

  • Magnus Bane:

The High Warlock of Brooklyn is being played by Harry Shum, Jr. For those of you who don't know Harry, he was in Glee and you guys have no idea how much I rooted for him, he barely got any screen time but managed to be one of my favorite characters on that show. You guys also have no idea how happy I am with this casting. He is PERFECT. Just look at him. He and Matthew (Alec) showed great chemistry on set. BUT, that doesn't mean I was pleased when I saw him during filming sessions, the wardrobe/makeup choice is a huge failure to me. I didn't think they'll ruin his face like that. Magnus is all about the glitter, cat eyes and blue flames. The stylists didn't even follow those major details. He looked awful, honestly. The movie Magnus at least had a decent makeup.

  • Valentine Morgenstern:

*SCREAMS* *FLIPS TABLES* *HUGS EVERYONE* yes, yes, yes, yes, YES. Valentine is being played by none other than ALAN VAN bloody SPRANG. This is pure perfection. This is my favorite casting of the tv show. I'm a huge fan of Reign and he played the evil, crazy, twisted, manipulative king of France and gave an flawless performance. I hated his character but his acting was beyond excellent, that's why when I heard that he'll play Valentine, I thought it was the ultimate best choice. Valentine is similar to King Henry in certain ways so I'm sure Alan won't disappoint us.

  • Luke Garroway:

He is being played by Isiah Mustafa and I can see Luke when I look at him. He looks protective, trustworthy and fatherly so I'm happy with this casting too. And a tiny note to those of you who are hating on him because of his skin color, you guys are a disappointment to our fandom. It's 2015 already, when will people stop being such pathetic racists!

  • Hodge Starkweather:

He is being played by Jon Cor. To be clear, Jon looks nothing like Hodge in the books. But hey I'm not complaining, adding eyecandies to the show is never a bad idea. His age seems on point too, unlike the Hodge in the movie. Hopefully, he will portray him well.
  • Jocelyn Fairchild:

She is being played by Maxim Roy. Honestly speaking she does look like the Jocelyn I pictured (she has that intense glare in her eyes) so I hope she plays her role well specially after I've heard a lot of praises about her acting.

Tiny Bonus:

Curtis Morgan on the casting of Shadowhunters:

"Dom is a great guy. He’s fun. But he’s Mr. Macho. The way you see him when you see him as Jace, that’s how he is.
To go along with that, Alberto, that’s exactly how he is. He is Simon. If you look at Alberto’s credits, he’s done a couple shows here and there as a guest, but he landed one of the leads in this role. Alberto is Simon. He is actually Simon. It’s uncanny. When you see him talk as Simon, just imagine the camera’s off. That’s exactly how Alberto talks. That’s exactly how he is. Great guy.
Magnus literally oozes out of Harry, who is a great guy too, he’s so cool. He’s the first actor I’ve worked with who can actually dance better than me. [Laughs]. He’s full of surprises and he will be a lot of people’s favorite character.
Alan as Valentine is soooooo intense, there are some scenes were he literally terrified me, Alan is a great actor and person who has become a master at what he does. I tried to learn as much from him as I could.
Emeraude is a wonderful person. She’s a little quiet, but when it’s time to work, she is quite a professional. She is one of the most professional people I’ve ever seen."

So that's it guys, overall I'm very pleased with this casting. The looks/ages are on point for all of them. And I truly hope that this TV show becomes successful because the movie flopped terribly and I hated it to be honest, it was lame and cheesy and they could've done way better than that. I have a good feeling about this adaption however and I can't wait for it to start airing. Tell me what you thought about the casting, I'd love to hear from you~
