June Wrap Up || 2016

Friday, July 1, 2016

June was one hell of a crazy month; I graduated high school and despite all the stress and exhaustion, I managed to read a total of 16 books which is a great accomplishment for a slow reader like me. Without further ado, here's my June wrap-up:

A Court Of Thorns and Roses | Sarah J. Maas:
Summary and Details || Rating: 5/5 stars.

One of my favourite reads of 2016. I loved the world building and I'm definitely picking up the second book soon.

The Young Elites | Marie Lu:
Summary and Details || Rating: 5/5 stars.

This book blew my mind away. It had all the elements I usually look for in a fantasy YA read. I must confess, I was hesitant to read it at first because Marie Lu is my favourite female author and I was afraid I'll be disappointed but it was perfect. Everything was on point. If you liked Six Of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one too.

Everything Leads To You | Nina Lacour:
Summary and Details || Rating: 4/5 stars.

This is my first time picking up a book that focuses on an LGBTQ+ plot and I chose this one because it showcased a lesbian relationship (that representation is almost non-existant in YA) and since I myself am bisexual, I thought it would be a somehow relatable experience. I was not disappointed! Everything Leads To You is the cutest and fluffiest book I've ever read. It was light and the main characters were adorable but I wished there was more focus on the romance. After all, that's what this book is supposed to be about.

Snow Like Ashes | Sara Raasch:
Summary and Details || Rating: 5/5 stars.

The female protagonist is an actual cinnamon roll. An enjoyable read. The writing and the plot were gripping and I can't wait to finish the rest of the trilogy.

A Thousand Pieces of You | Claudia Gray:
Summary and Details || Rating: 5/5 stars.

I fell in love with this book from the very start. The romance was heartwarming. It's about parallel worlds and the plot is simple yet intriguing, not to mention that the concept is very cool. If you enjoyed Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier, you'll like this one.

The 5th Wave | Rick Yancey:
Summary and Details || Rating: 5/5 stars.

Holy heavens, this book kept of the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it. It was angsty, action-packed, brilliant and I absolutely adored every single bit of it.

Throne of Glass | Sarah J. Maas:
Summary and Details || Rating: 3/5 stars.

I finally decided to give the Throne of Glass series a shot (let's admit it, the fandom is humongous and the fanarts are amazing) but I must also admit that it did not live up to my expectations. At all. The plot was boring, predictable and the characters didn't fascinate me. I'm not giving up yet. I do wish it will get better.

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children | Ransom Riggs:
Summary and Details || Rating: 4/5 stars.

I may or may not have an unhealthy obsession with Eva Green. The minute I heard they cast her in the movie adaptation, I instantly decided that it was time to finally read the book. The plot is very unique and compelling and Jacob is one sassy sweetheart. If you're a fan of American Horror Story: Murder House, you might enjoy this.

Cinder | Marissa Meyer:
Summary and Details || Rating: 4/5 stars.

A fast-paced read. The world building is remarkable and I enjoyed the majority of it. One more thing: #TeamQueenLevana.

After The End | Amy Plum:
Summary and Details || Rating: 4/5 stars.

You know how dystopian books leave me? Depressed. But what can I do. I love wallowing in sorrow. Since it's summer though, I decided to pick a light dystopian-ish, sci-fi-ish, fantasy-ish book and After The End combined all of those above. Juneau is such a kickass protagonist. It was truly riveting and I do hope more people read it.

The Lightning Thief | Rick Riordan:
Summary and Details || Rating: 3/5 stars.

Imagine how excited I was before reading The Lightning Thief. Now imagine a disappointed me confused because she didn't like this book even though everyone around her did. The plot was WAY TOO PREDICTABLE and the characters didn't capture my attention. I guess middle grade books are not for me. Or at least Rick Riordan's.

Captive Prince | C. S. Pacat:
Summary and Details || Rating: 1/5 stars.

And the Disappointment of The Year Award goes to *drum rolls* Captive Prince. I can rant forever on how much I hated this book. Let's put it this way, If you enjoy the romanticization of rape, sexual abuse, pedophilia, slavery, torture... go ahead and read it. I won't judge.

Poised Apples: Poems For You My Pretty | Christine Heppermann:
Summary and Details || Rating: 3/5 stars.

I don't usually read poetry but the idea intrigued me. I did expect to enjoy it more but overall, it was noteworthy.

The Sandman, Vol 2: The Doll's House | Neil Gaiman:
Summary and Details || Rating: 4/5 stars.

The first volume was outstanding and I loved this one but slightly less. O God, give me the time to finish the masterpiece that is The Sandman comic books.

Fantastic Mr. Fox | Roald Dahl:
Summary and Details || Rating: 4/5 stars.

The audiobook is an absolute delight. The writing is whimsical and the plot is quirky. Did I mention how much I loved the audiobook?

The Halloween Tree | Ray Bradbury:
Summary and Details || Rating: 4/5 stars.

A perfect Halloween read. Can October come already!

That's all, I'm afraid. For a procrastinator like me, I think I made a good progress. Don't forget to tell me about your June reads~
