The NSFW Book Tag

Wednesday, August 3, 2016

I successfully managed to stay away from tags for a while but I do think it's about time for a new one. Today, I'll be doing the NSFW (Not Suitable For Work) tag! It was created by Chapterstackss and LukeLaneReads. Here we go:

1. What is the LAST book you would want your parents to walk in on you reading?

To be very honest, my parents were never the conservative type. I can read whatever I want even if it's controversial. But if I had to pick an answer, I'd say the Empty Zone comic book series by Jason Shawn Alexander. The reason behind this choice is that a lot of the covers are quite racy. Even though I know my parents wouldn't mind, that won't stop them from embarrassing me. Mostly mom since she's a painter. She would find this a perfect opportunity to tease me by criticizing the artwork.

2. It's storming outside, and you're home alone for the night. What book would only make matters worse?

The Demonologist by Andrew Piper
. The funny thing about this book is that I read it in one sitting and it didn't scare me the least bit, I remember being disappointed by it at first. Then I went to bed and I still remember to this day all the terrible nightmares I had. To re-read this book when I'm home alone would be one of the stupidest things I ever do. I'd also pick 172 Hours On The Moon by Johan Harstad. I haven't read it yet but I heard it's disturbing and has aliens in it. I. Hate. Aliens.

3. Have you ever read a book simply because of the controversy surrounding it?

Harry Potter is considered one of the most controversial series of all time. So there's that. But I must say I'm tempted to read Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. For those of you who don't know what the book is about, It tells the story of Humbert, a middle-aged man and his love affair with his 12-year-old stepdaughter, Lolita. I did actually watch the 1997 adaptation and I absolutely loved it. The movie was beautifully done and exceeded all my expectations.

4. What is the most cringe-inducing romance or sex scene you have ever read?

The sex scene in A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray is actually a favourite of mine. The reason I picked it is because I didn't read this book, I listened to it. Back then my earphones weren't working and since it's YA, It didn't even occur to me that there would be a sex scene in it. My little sister was with me when it came up and I could've lowered the volume (I really thought nothing would happen) but I didn't. What made matters worse was that even when I knew the author was serious about it, I was sure the narrator would only narrate it but no, she didn't just narrate it, she made sex sounds. And they were loud and awful and cringe-worthy and I don't even want to remember the look on my sister's face. Dear Tavia Gilbert, I appreciate your efforts but you ruined a well written sex scene for nothing.

5. What book has made you question the author's sanity?

No, I did not read the books. But I watched the TV show and I'm telling you, George R. R. Martin is not the person you would want to be stuck in the same room with. He may be an excellent author and storyteller but he gives me the creeps and I'm sure I'd question his sanity even more when I get around to reading his series.

6. Have ever put down a book and not finished it because the content was too much for you?

I'm not the kind of person to give up on a book but I had to put down Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat many times while reading it because it was insane. I've mentioned a couple of times before how much I hated it. I did finish the book eventually but it took me a lot of guts to do so.

7. What fictional character do you have the most NSFW thoughts about?

The real question is: Who DON'T I have NSFW thoughts about? Because that would be one teeny tiny list. Initially I couldn't pick just one person but I settled on:

Death (The Sandman by Neil Gaiman):

One of the many things Neil Gaiman is great at is writing amazing female characters. Death is sassy, attractive and badass. She's my ultimate girl crush.

8. Show us your most NSFW book cover (or drawing/photo inside a book)?

One Sinful Night by Kaitlin O'Rilly. Yeah. I don't even know how that happened. It wasn't even cheap so I could blame it on my book buying addiction.

For the drawing/picture inside a book, I chose Portait Of A Killer: Jack The Ripper by Patricia Cornwell. It contained actual photographes of Jack The Ripper's victims and they were quite unsettling.

9. Have you ever read something from the erotica/romance genre, and what did you think?

Story of O by Pauline Réage. Look, it wasn't bad. But it wasn't good either. The writing is excellent, I admit it. The plot, not the slightest bit. I don't have a problem with this genre, I just hate it when the story is lame or there to just fill the pages but I guess they call it erotica for a reason.

10. You stumble across a portkey. What fictional world would you NOT want to be transported to?

Any post-apocalyptic/Dystopian world. But the one I would never under any circumstances survive in would be the world in The 5th Wave By Rick Yancey. I hate aliens with every fiber of my being and to live in one with the constant threat of those creatures is unbearable. I would rather volunteer as a tribute and die in The Arena than to exist in Yancey's world.
